The best possible way to function requires your body to have both stability and mobility. Stability has many parts.  In order for our bodies to be stable we have to be able to transfer loads (i.e. stand on one leg, walk, run, squat, lift) while protecting our muscles and joints, breathing and being able to maintain bowel and bladder continence.  Our bodies become a puzzle when they no longer functional optimally or with pain. Our goal is to understand the puzzle and help you become aware of the things you do that cause an overloading of certain structures (i.e. low back, neck, ribs) and create pain.

How Can A Physical Therapist Help?

Our job is to educate you on your anatomy and biomechanics so you can learn optimal function for each region of your body and then integrate that into a whole.  In order to do this we use the Integrated Systems Model (ISM) developed by physiotherapists Diane Lee and Linda-Joy Lee from Canada. This model considers the physiological and psychosocial status of the patient as well as the functional integrity of the articular (joints), myofascial (muscles and connective tissues), neural (nerve) and visceral (organ) systems. This model looks at the cause of your pain versus just looking at the painful structure. This requires an understanding of how the body functions as a whole and how some problems can impact other areas of the body.  It also requires an understanding of how the things you feel, and believe, about your current experience can impact your function.

Ultimately, our goal is to help you change the way you use your body initially by creating an awareness of the things you are doing that are currently overloading structures and creating pain. We will then provide you with the tools needed (education, control, flexibility & strength) to move/exercise in ways that create optimal loading and efficient, pain free movement.

Following the evaluation, an individualized treatment plan is developed. This plan is based on the evaluation findings, and input from your doctor or other medical provider. Your provider will receive a copy of the initial evaluation, progress notes and the discharge summary. 

Each person has unique and different needs, requiring varying amounts of time and visits for therapy. Your plan of care will be based on your individual needs anywhere from 10-20+ times. In addition to clinic visits, you will receive exercises and instructions for things that you can do in the privacy of your home.
